Sheba Milestones

1948Abandoned army camp converted to military hospital (Army Hospital No. 5) under Israeli leadership of Dr. Chaim Sheba, Surgeon General, Israel Defense Forces.
1953Administration of 650-bed hospital transferred to Ministry of Health, becoming a civilian medical center.
1959Rehabilitation Center established.
1960First open-heart surgery performed.
1964Artificial Kidney Unit established.
1968Fellowship program instituted for students from the United States.
1970Guardians of Courage established in Los Angeles by Charlotte Sinay.
1979Oncology Building dedicated.
1981Gindi Family Cafeteria, in memory of Elie J. Gindi of Los Angeles, completed.
1982First Israeli test tube baby born.

1984Max & Pauline Zimmer Foundation funded Cardiac Outpatient Clinic.
1985Friends of Sheba Open Heart Surgery Department inaugurated. Samuel Jared Kushnick Pediatric Immunology Research Center established.
1986The Lodzer Organization of California established Leukemia Project in memory of Rita Miller.
1987Friends of Sheba Women's Group established to benefit Pediatric Psychiatric Center.
1988Friends of Sheba contributed $850,000 to Sheba Cancer Institute.
1990Friends of Sheba launched $1.5 million campaign for Obstetrics/Gynecology project.
1991Marilyn & Sigi Ziering funded Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology project.
1992Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Research Institute established.
1993Frances Brody Gynecological Clinic established.
1995Israel's first AIDS Hospice created. Seymour Hammerman Pediatric Psychosomatic Department established (inspired by Stanley Eisenberg and Marjorie Pressman).
1996Anna & Max Webb Oncological Day Clinic inaugurated by the Webbs.
1997Hospital selected by GE as one of 15 in the world to use revolutionary Magnetic Resonance Technology to make both diagnosis and non-invasive surgery safer and more accurate.
1998Women's Group & Sponsor-a-Child Campaign donated $70,000 to special pediatric nurses training program. Women of Sheba sent $125,000 to Hospital for first Pediatric Hospice in Israel, the Marion and Elie Wiesel Children's Pavilion. Center for Adolescents & Young Adults established by Ruth Ziegler & Ziegler Family Trust.
1999Friends of Sheba donated $250,000 to purchase a gamma camera for use in non-invasive surgery. Friends of Sheba donated an additional $100,000 towards the Anna & Max Webb Oncology Day Clinic.
2000Women of Sheba donated $100,000 to the Pediatric Gastroenterology Department. Friends of Sheba donated an additional $150,000 to the hospital.
2001Friends of Sheba launched $1 million campaign to establish the Dr. Sigi Ziering Brain Tumor Unit at the new Oncology Institute.
2002Hospital created Medical Simulation Center to train Israel's IDF doctors, nurses, and paramedics for disaster attacks. Hospital performed first stem cell transplant in Israel. Friends of Sheba donated over $600,000 to the hospital.
2003Rubinfeld Rehabilitation Hotel donated by Rubin Rubinfeld and Family. Dr. Sigi Ziering Brain Tumor Unit at new Oncology Institute completed.
2004Dr. Sigi Ziering Brain Tumor Unit dedicated. Shani-Goldman Building inaugurated.
2005Friends of Sheba launched its first Mission to Israel, led by Executive Director Jack Saltzberg and Co-Chairs Gal Ben-Naim and Ruth Steinberger. Four-year campaign announced: the Israel Center for Newborn Screening, 2006-2009, chaired by Marilyn Ziering.
2006February: Anna & Max Webb donated $2 million toward the Israel Center for Newborn Screening, the largest gift ever in the history of the Friends of Sheba Medical Center. May: A group of supporters led by Daniel Ziv pledged over $250,000 to purchase new life-saving equipment in the pediatric intensive care unit equipment in The Edmond and Lily Safra Children's Hospital. May: Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, in a coma following a stroke, is moved to Sheba Medical Center. July: The most severely wounded soldiers and civilians from the war in Lebanon are treated at Sheba and the National Center for Rehabilitation. November: Marilyn Ziering pledged $4 million toward a naming gift for the new Sigi & Marilyn Ziering National Center for Newborn Screening.
2007January: Marilyn Ziering created the Million Dollar Women's Club, with a goal of one hundred women raising one million dollars. February: Dr. Amitai Ziv, Sheba's Deputy Director, was awarded the $100,000 Charles Bronfman Humanitarian Award for "Changing the Face of Medical Education and reshaping the way medical care is delivered throughout the world."
